Here are a few things you can do to make yourself feel like the belle of the ball again:
The Michelin Man look is SO out! Let’s face it; years ago, winter parkas had to be three inches thick to provide you with any semblance of warmth, but today’s fabric technologies makes it virtually inexcusable to look like the Michelin Man’s cousin! Look for sleek, fitted jackets in a ¾ length (just above the knee) with
GoreTex® and Microfiber® which will provide a waterproof shell and an insulating interior. One-hundred percent pure cashmere is one of the warmest materials you will find (short of buying yourself a full-length Russian sable!!), and coats made of this material come in many flattering colors and styles. A classic color and style will last you for years (such as a single-breasted coat in camel or charcoal
grey). Make sure you have a brightly-colored set of gloves, hat and scarf – cherry red, fuchsia, or lemon yellow are all colors that will cheer you up and get you noticed during the drab days of winter.
Your summer highlights have disappeared under the weight of dull, mousy hair: It’s not a good idea to highlight your hair in the winter since you tend to use hotter water, which will fade your color out. Instead, try a glaze or a tone-refiner, which will bring back some shine to your hair, and wait until March or April to redo your highlights. A do-it-yourself that I have used and love is L’Oreal Tone Refiner, which is a monthly gloss treatment, which coats the strands of the hair with a clear, semi-permanent gloss. Also, to deal with flyaways and hair dulled by cold wind, try Pantene’s new Winter Rescue formulations. They are specially formulated for winter weather and really do work!
Skin that’s dry, dry, dry, itchy and scratchy: Coat yourself in body butters. These heavy-duty moisturizers are loaded with emollients like shea butter and smell yummy too. Clinique Deep Comfort Body Butter (with the accompanying body wash) is perfect for all-day nourishing, and I also stand by my other favorite - Olay Moisturinse for Extra Dry Skin; I have used it since it first came out, and my skin has never felt better!
Your brittle nails break and split on everything: The first step is to nourish nails by coating your cuticles. Like skin, nails can become dry due to lack of humidity, and dry cuticles are the first problem. Try a cuticle cream such as Sally Hansen Cuticle Defense Antioxidant Cuticle Complex. Also, use a brush-on a nail strengthener fortified with proteins or calcium, like Barrielle Nail Re-building Protein and Neutrogena Instant Nail Enhancer. These products are filled with beneficial conditioners and add protection to your nails. Also, be sure to load up on foods with healthy fatty acids like salmon, almonds, and avocados, as this will also moisturize your nails from the inside out.
Rough, dry heels from rubbing inside your boots: Snow boots are hard on your feet and you can reverse this with silicone-gel-pad insoles like Apara Heel Appeal, which prevent constant friction. Or, use one a foot cream after your bath such as Eucerin Plus Intensive Repair Foot Crème. The old standby that your mother used to use, also works well: slather your feet in Vaseline and wear a pair of cotton socks to bed. In the morning, your feet will be as soft as silk!
Lips that feel like sandpaper: a common misconception is that lip balm will always make your lips feel soft and supple, so why isn’t your old Chapstick working anymore? Sometimes lips can get so dry that they develop a scaly layer of skin, beneath which it is difficult for the emollients from your everyday lip balm to penetrate. When this is the case, coat your lips with Vaseline or Vitamin E oil, and rub gently with a washcloth or baby toothbrush that’s been rinsed in warm water. This will help the outer layer of skin rub off, making your lips ready to receive moisture. Then, reach for Bigelow Mentha Lip Shine or Burt’s Bees Honey Lip Balm, and apply liberally, as often as you need to. A tinted lip balm will also give your lips some much-needed color during the dreary winter days!
