Picture this:
it’s Friday evening. You have had a long (and
stressful) week at work, but you take solace in the
fact that you have big plans tonight. Say, for
example, you are invited to attend a close
friend’s engagement party; or perhaps you’ve
been invited to your significant other’s Christmas
gala; or heck, maybe it’s your school’s ten year
reunion. What do you wear? Not to worry,
mademoiselle. You *can* look absolutely ravishing at
the event (and yes, ensure you seize the attention
of the opposite sex), assuming you take the time to
shop before the date and are willing to take some
risks.

You are
probably asking yourself what “risks” I’m
talking about. I’m sure you all have heard the
‘little black dress’ mantra a thousand times
over. It goes something like this: if ever in doubt,
wear your trademark little black dress for formal
and semi-formal events. Well, a little black dress
is O.K. if you want to go unnoticed at the party
you’ve been waiting all week for (or if you plan
on attending the Osbourne family’s fall Gothic
festival). Perhaps I’m being a little too harsh on
little black dresses everywhere as I would be lying
if I told you I didn’t have one (OK more than one)
myself-heck look at my picture. Nevertheless, in an
age when color (and no, black does not qualify for
purposes of this article) is lauded, and cocktail
gowns are increasingly produced in bright hues of
blue, green, yellow, red and pink, why settle for
mere conformity? (Just take a look at these pictures
if you don’t believe me!)
When it comes to purchasing that perfect gown for
that evening’s affair, the sky’s the limit on
what you can wear. Rule number one is to shop a lot
and shop early – don’t fall in love with the
first dress you see. Obviously, the other important
rule is to exercise discretion in picking the gown
for the event; a black, strapless, see-through dress
is a no-no for your friend’s engagement party.
It’s important to be feminine *and* appropriate
for the event. Look for gowns with distinctive
patterns, beadwork, or unique color configurations
– remember, the goal is to set yourself apart from
the crowd – and that little black dress in your
closet just won’t cut it this fall.
