Start At The Top: Your Hair Style Speaks Volumes

It’s about glamour, panache and individuality. Christine sets the rules for this fall's hairstyles.

I have had an unusually large number of inquiries regarding this fall’s hairstyle trends, so I thought I would dedicate a column to it. I must confess I find it ironic that something so defining is held in secondary esteem; simply changing one’s hairstyle can dramatically (and instantaneously) compliment their appearance for a particular night’s affair. While there are no ‘set’ trends for this season’s hairstyles, there are two general rules to adhere to: first, it’s all about glamour this fall; and second, it’s about tailoring a style to flatter a person’s facial characteristics as well as the event(s) they plan on attending. Flashback to the 90s: remember everyone sporting the Jennifer Aniston haircut? This fall is the antithesis of that era – it’s about panache and individuality.

A quick synopsis of some of the styles that can be experimented with successfully this upcoming season:

Styling ‘Up’

This style screams ‘business casual meets prom queen’. Since the days of the ever-classy Audrey Hepburn, this up-do hairstyle has graced the halls of courtrooms, business meetings, and even the red carpets over the years. After all, what could be more glamorous than being Audrey for a day? This style works best with slightly damp or wet hair.

Glamorous Locks

Wavy locks and curls highlight the trends for fall hair – full bodied, shiny, silky, tousled hair can be both glamorous and tantalizing. Truthfully, there is nothing more sexy and attention grabbing than a natural curls look, if one’s hair is healthy and well taken care of. No other style conveys the same sense of confidence and grace (and remember-they are also fun!). Several celebrities, including but certainly not limited to Julia Roberts, Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, Sharon Stone, Beyonce, and even Aishwairya Rai have graced the stage/red carpet with curls.

What’s that? You have limp hair? With a little stylist help, you should be able to attain that perfect curly look for your special night out. Rule numero uno is to use the best hair care/style products you can justify purchasing. For loose, sexy curls, apply a thickening spray-gel or a root lifter before blow-drying your hair, or, in lieu of blow drying for extended periods of time, blow-dry just your roots (letting your ends air dry). Roll a brush from your ends to your roots and dry the section while you are rolling. If you are seeking flowing, bouncing curls, spray a little hairspray on your hair and then use heated rollers to achieve a firm hold. If you’ve already got natural locks, you’re lucky – just be sure you consult with your stylist to make sure you maintain your style without damaging your hair.

Short and Sexy: The ‘Power’ Cut

What’s that you say? It’s a man’s world? Not anymore buddy. Short hair cuts emanate confidence, security, and the ‘ready to conquer… anything’ image, and that is why we in the fashion industry call it the power cut. More importantly, however, short hair styles are much, much easier to manage and also can reduce the appearance of one’s age.

Before going and cropping off your long locks, however, I suggest you make an appointment with your stylist (don’t forget to bring several photographs of yourself!) – that way, there will be no surprises (and no lawsuits!) after he or she starts clipping. Also—short hair styles work best with fine hair; if you have extremely curly hair, it may be better to go with a different look as hair texture is very important when considering a short style.

Parting Hair: Style on a Budget

Ok, I hear you. You’re saving up for the Holiday season (aren’t we all?), and you want to change your hairstyle without resorting to calling mom and dad to ask them for their credit card number so you can buy them a gift for Christmas. If you’re on a tight budget, a simple way to change the appearance of one’s hair is to vary the way in which you part your hair. The most common part is the one down the center of the head; instead of this natural part, try to forge a new part slightly to the right or left of your current part – even a change as simple as this can highlight (or disguise) certain facial features and compliment one’s appearance.

That’s an overview of just some of the styles you can experiment with this fall season. Whatever style you may choose to go with, have fun with it – take some risks, make a statement, but above all else-be comfortable with yourself and your appearance. Don’t be afraid to switch up your incumbent style – who knows, maybe you’ll start the next trend!
