BY MAHADEV DESAI

“It was a complete surprise” says modest, self-effacing and soft spoken Madhavi Kasam, a classical homeopathic practitioner in Metro Atlanta, Georgia, of the prestigious Hind Rattan Award, 2009 bestowed upon her in New Delhi, on January 25 by the NRI Welfare Society of India.

The NRI Welfare Society of India, formed about 20 years ago, recognizes the economic and philanthropic achievements of the Indian diaspora with its annual Awards. Surprise or not, Madhavi Kasam truly deserves the Award, for her commendable, and outstanding academic, professional and compassionate humanitarian outreach services to the community at large.
In an excusive interview, Madhavi said that she was born and raised in a middle class family in Ponnur, Andhra Pradesh, India. She graduated from JSPS Homeopathic Medical College, Hyderabad in 1994.While at school and at college, she won several prizes in debates, essay competitions and sports and actively participated in dancing, conducting yoga classes for students and raising funds through charitable projects. In 1994, she married Nagesh, an IT Graduate, (an arranged marriage) in Hyderabad. They became proud parents of daughters Apurva, born in India in 1995 and Anuhya, born in the U.S.in 2001. Madhavi briefly practiced homeopathy in Hyderabad and Delhi but when Nagesh got an opportunity to work for California-based IT Company, they moved to Bay Area, California in 1996. Madhavi earned the highest qualification in homeopathy in the U.S.-she got certified in Classical Homeopathy (CCH) from the Council for Homeopathic Certification. Incidentally, she is the only member of North American Society of Homeopaths, RSHom(NA)in the State of Georgia. NASH is dedicated to promote, represent and serve in the voice of all professional homeopaths in North America. She also studied many healing techniques such as Yoga, meditation, Reiki and hypnotism.

In year 2000, the Georgia –based company offered Nagesh an opportunity to work in Atlanta, so the family moved here. “We love the weather and people of Georgia, and are happy with the move” Nagesh said.

Not only does Madhavi practice homeopathy full time but also tries to promote it and increase its awareness and remove its misconceptions among the public. She does this by participating in Health Fairs, medical seminars and conferences. She was a guest speaker at CAM conference on Cancer in West Palm Beach, Florida. She also gave a talk at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She is very appreciative of her husband and daughter’s supportive role in all she is doing. They have organized several fund raising events for Child Relief and You( CRY), in Birmingham, Alabama; The family’s philanthropy extends to India even. They have sponsored a school staff room, and other village upliftment projects in Nagesh’s native village in Nalgonda Dt., Andhra Pradesh. “Homeopathy works wonders for all kinds of problems from cold to cancer. It is the miracle health care for many complicated and challenging health problems. It cures the problem with out side effects. Homeopathy works from the root. Homeopaths take care of person suffering with problem rather than the disease. Homeopathy helps people to heal them selves by assisting healing mechanism they are born with. By this method people come out of recurring health conditions and incurable problems. Homeopathy has shown wonders in Eczema, Ear infections, Asthma, Allergies, Migraines, PMS, Arthritis, Digestion issues, ADHD, Autism, Hypertension, Diabetes, Hypothyroidism, Sleeplessness, Anxiety and Depression. It is a very good option in mechanical injuries and first aid also. It is the safe health care for babies also as Homeopaths use very minute diluted doses sparingly, “ Madhavi said and continued,

“Homeopathy and Indian heritage are two important things in my life. Indian culture has taught me to live life to the fullest extent in sharing, giving and loving. Homeopathy helps me to help the needy as it is very economical.”
Madhavi and her family is truly a role model for the community; a shining beacon of hope and love and a living testament of what difference even a caring and giving family can make !
