New York, Sep 26 (IANS) A 54-year-old Indian American woman died in a hit-and-run accident that occurred on a highway in Pennsylvania.
Jaya Brahmbhatt died on the spot when a speeding dark-coloured car tried to overtake and then hit the driver's side of the Honda Civic in which she was travelling along with her husband and another female passenger last weekend on Interstate 83, local reports said.
The Honda Civic hit a roadside embankment Sunday night near Fairview Township, Butler County, after being hit and flipped twice before landing on its roof.
The other car sped away from the scene.
Jaya, who was wearing a seatbelt, died of massive head injuries. Her husband, 65-year-old Mahendra Brahmbhatt, who was on the wheel, and the other passenger were rushed to Penn State Hershey Medical Center near the Pennsylvania's capital Harrisburg, according to the York Daily News.
Mahendra Brahmbhatt has since been released and the other victim will survive, another report in the York Dispatch said
Jaya, who was a resident of Jackson Township in York County, Pennsylvania, had come to the US as a newly wed in 1975. Apart from her husband, she leaves behind four daughters.
York County Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward for information that would help state police arrest the hit-and-run driver.
