New York, Oct 15 (IANS) An Indian nanny has been arrested by the New Jersey police on charges of aggravated assault on a five-month old infant after her act was caught on camera.
The video footage showed Manjula Patel, 51, of Rochelle Park, New Jersey (NJ), slapping and shaking the infant, then throwing her on a hardwood floor and stomping and kicking her, according to reports.
Patel, currently lodged in a county jail, has been charged with aggravated assault and child endangerment, counts which each carry up to 10 years in prison upon conviction, reports newjersey.com.
According to Prosecutor Liliana Silebi, the beating of the girl was caught on video by her parents who became suspicious after their daughter seemed unusually lethargic. So, they left a home recorder running on a table in their living room. After they came home and viewed the video, they called the emergency services.
"It was a horrifying video," said Michael Mordaga, chief of detectives at the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office.
"We have detectives who deal with child abuse cases on a daily basis, and it was too traumatic for them to watch," he added.
Preliminary tests have shown that the infant suffered from several bruises but no broken bones.
"The baby, who is being treated at a local hospital, was expected to make a full physical recovery," one of the prosecutors said.
Patel arrived from India in June and had been hired by the Upper Saddle River couple six weeks ago after seeing her baby sitting ad in a local ethnic Indian newspaper.
