Bhajanotsavam by Atlanta Konkani Bhakta Mandali

Atlanta, GA, July 27, 2018: Atlanta Konkani Bhakta Mandali is celebrating its tenth anniversary of the tradition of conducting Vishnusahasranam every first Saturday of the month amongst the Konkani community in the greater Atlanta area. To commemorate this milestone of observing its cultural traditions that have not only served to foster community but also introduce  children to these riches, the mandali is organizing a two-day  ‘Bhajanotsavam’ on August 11th Saturday evening and August 12th Sunday Morning. Recreating the festive environment from back home, this event is on the lines of Bhajan Saptaha in Udupi.

Aside from bhajans, as part of the utsav, the mandali plans to conduct:

– Satyanarayana Pooja: to invoke the blessings of the Lord for the health and prosperity of our community;

– Procession: There are blissful joyful events planned around the theme with ‘Palaki Theru’ procession of Lord Narayan and Maha Laxmi. There will also be Bhajan with Vittal, Vittal dance! to suit the theme.

– Harikatha: an opportunity to listen to exquisite story-telling of religious stories in Konkani by the rare talent that is Bhavani Mayi, one of the few living proponents of this art form. It is our community’s privilege to have Bhavani Mayi in our midst this summer and listen to her one more time.

Bhavana Mai, as she is endearingly known within the GSB community started reading Hindu scriptures and such accomplished works as the Bhagavadgita, Bhagavat, Sampurna Ramayana as well as Mahabharata with the grace of Sudhindrathirth Swamiji of Kashimutt samsthan from early 2000s. As she read through these books, she realized that the essence of these books was a divine lesson in leading a noble and empathetic life, a true Hindu way of living. By Swamiji’s grace, he helped her realize that her purpose in life was to spread her knowledge as far and wide as possible. He bestowed upon her the title of Shrimad Bhagvat pravachana Samartha as well as Shrimad Ramayana Pravachana Visharadha. The GSB community acknowledged her excellent contributions by bestowing upon her the title of Shrimad Bhagavadgita Pravachana Visharadha ( Karkal ) and Shrimad Hari Katha Pravachana Samartha ( Dombivili, Mumbai ). Over the years, Bhavana Mai has traveled all over India spreading her word as well as international locations like United States & Middle East.
