This month, we feature Peshawari lehengas, reminiscent of the Mughal era, but with a modern twist. Traditional Peshawari lehengas were made of heavy brocade. These days, the thick fabric has made way to light chiffons and net in reds, greens and peacock blue- which happens to be the color of 2012.
The lehenga is tailored out of 10-yards of chiffon or net set in kalis, and the lining is designed out of brocade or satin. A 12-inch broad panel made of banarasi and shimmer at the bottom of the lehenga adds the traditional touch to the outfit. The border usually has pretty motifs.
The blouse is usually sleeveless with a deep V neck that is edged with trim with embroidery that matches the lehenga.
The jacket is designed out of the same fabric as the lehenga, with full sleeves. The bottom of the sleeves have pleats with decorative stones. A 16-inch deep neck makes sure the blouse is partially visible. The jacket is the piece-de-resistance of the attire. It is embellished with crystals, stones, Swarovski crystals etc. The net dupatta is light and has no embellishments.
A lighter version of the Peshawari lehenga has a simple lehenga, with work only on the jacket.
Jewelry: Wear heavy kundan with long earrings and tikka. No bangles because the jacket is full sleeved.
Shoes: Simple pointed high heels.
Purse: Simple raw silk clutch with just one decorative brooch.
Hairstyle: Updoes are the way to go.
Make-up: Bright make-up with emphasis on eye shadow in the color of the outfit.
